Choosing the Right Chassis for a High-End Van Conversion

Choosing the Right Chassis for a High-End Van Conversion

Sprinter, Crafter, MAN, or Ducato?

The base vehicle determines everything else. In a high-end van conversion, it influences structural possibilities, insulation thickness, furniture layout, weight management, driving comfort, and long-term value. It’s not just a shell into which an interior is installed. It’s an integral part of the project.

On paper, theMercedes Sprinter, theVolkswagen Crafter, theMAN TGE, and theFiat Ducato seem comparable. In practice, however, when you build with real materials, proper insulation, and a thoughtful architectural approach, their differences become clear.

We have experience with several of these platforms. Over time, our choice has become clear.

Working Within Constraints

TheMercedes Sprinterisn't the easiest vehicle to convert. Its walls are more curved than those of the Crafter or the Ducato. In the workshop, this makes the work more challenging.

Furniture can't just be placed at right angles. The panels must be fitted with precision. Storage solutions must be designed to work with the curve, not against it.

It takes more time and requires greater attention to detail.

But when these curves are followed and incorporated into the drawing, the result is different.

Softer. More architectural. Less utilitarian.

Light travels differently across curved surfaces. The interior appears more cohesive and serene. In a project that incorporates Fenix, solid oak, and high-quality textiles, this curvature becomes a true aesthetic asset.

We accept this added complexity because the end result justifies it.

Construction Reality: Weight and Structure

A thoughtfully designed interior adds weight. We use multilayer insulation, acoustic treatment, Fenix laminate on ultra-lightweight plywood, and solid wood. These choices are intentional—and they have a structural impact.

The vehicle must be able to withstand this load over the long term without compromising its stability or durability.

Depending on the model, theSprinter offers solid load-carrying capacity and a rear-wheel-drive layout that remains well-balanced even after the vehicle has been converted. Under load, it maintains stable and reassuring handling.

TheVolkswagen Crafterand theMAN TGEare also solid platforms. Their slightly straighter side walls simplify certain aspects of construction, and their structure handles the weight well.

TheFiat Ducatois one of the most widely used base vehicles in Europe. Its generous interior width is partly responsible for its success.

For our type of build—which features a variety of materials and is properly insulated—we find that propulsion platforms offer better balance once the vehicle is complete.

Driving Experience

The driving experience becomes more important the farther you go.

TheMercedes Sprinteroffers the most refined ride quality in the group. The steering is precise for a vehicle of this size. High-speed stability is solid, especially in crosswinds. Long trips are more relaxing and less tiring.

Rear-wheel drive helps ensure better weight distribution once the van has been converted. This becomes more noticeable in a high-end project where the interior is heavy.

TheCrafteroffers a stable and comfortable ride. TheMAN TGE, which is based on the same platform, provides a similar driving experience. Both are reliable and well-suited for long-distance travel.

The front-wheel-driveDucato handles differently under load. For many applications, it’s still perfectly suited, but the overall feel isn’t the same as that of rear-wheel-drive models.

None of these bases is inadequate. The difference lies in their level of refinement and stability.

Cabin Ambience and Technology

In a luxury van conversion, the cab should not be separated from the living area.

The Sprinter’s cabin is more akin to a high-end passenger car than a traditional commercial vehicle. Seating comfort, ergonomics, and perceived quality are all well executed. The standard sound insulation provides a solid foundation for additional acoustic treatment.

Recent models feature a clear digital instrument cluster and a well-integrated multimedia system. Driver-assistance features—adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and crosswind assist—help reduce fatigue on long trips.

The Crafter and the MAN TGE feature functional, modern, and well-built cabins that come across as slightly more utilitarian.

The Ducato remains simple and effective. The features vary by model. It serves its purpose, but in a high-end project, the overall consistency between the cab and the living area becomes important.

The transition from a carefully designed interior to a well-crafted cockpit maintains the harmony of the design.

Value after five years

A custom-designed interior is a significant investment. The choice of base material affects its value over time.

In the high-end conversion segment, the Mercedes Sprinter generally retains the highest residual value. The brand’s reputation, reliability, and European service network contribute to strong resale value, especially when combined with a high-quality interior.

TheCrafterand theMAN TGEalso hold their value well, although slightly less so than the Sprinter in the premium market.

Because of its popularity, theDucato remains easy to resell on the global market for motorhomes and camper vans.

In the high-end segment, the perception of the platform plays a significant role in long-term value.

In line with our philosophy

We have built on several of these platforms. Each one has its own strengths.

But at Rocksalt, our approach is based on architectural design, sustainable materials, and a commitment to long-term consistency. We prioritize precision over convenience.

The Sprinter isn’t the easiest vehicle to customize. Its curves require precision. However, when carefully incorporated, they create an interior that is more fluid, more cohesive, and more visually appealing.

For us, choosing a chassis isn’t just about the numbers. It’s part of a broader vision: to create high-end camper vans that remain relevant, enjoyable to drive, and aesthetically cohesive for years to come.

Constraints, when accepted and managed effectively, often lead to better results.

This is the reasoning that guides our decisions.
